Club History

Rotary International finds its roots in Chicago in 1905. It took 14 years for the movement to reach the Mexican Republic, and many more to establish an active network of Rotarians.

Rotary first sprouted in the Mexican Republic in 1919. In 1928 the movement reached Queretaro, fostered by the district governor, Don Marcelino Garza, and other socio-political activists, like Dr. Esteban Paulin and Luitenant Eduardo Balvanera. But dire circumstances curbed the movement; the country was being ravaged by a frantic war.

In a second attempt in 1945, the Rotary Club of Celaya planted a club in Queretaro. The new delegation was again comprised of the Municipal President, in this case Don Jose Calzada Arivzu, several of his delegates, Don Miguel Rodriguez, Don Fernando Pacheco and other prominent men, and the Governor of the State of Queretaro, Don Agapito Pozo Balbas.

They initiated their first formal session on the 13 of October 1945, but this club crumbled, too.

The Rotary Club of Celaya persisted in their efforts to foster Rotary in Queretaro. Nineteen forty-nine brought the arrival of a man who embodied the spirit of Rotary: Don Mario Nardoni Zeni. He began inviting his compatriots to gather on a regular basis, and out of these reunions sprouted a revival of efforts to establish Rotary in Queretaro. In 1955, Rotary in Queretaro finally took root thanks to the help of the District Governor, Victor E. Prieto, and the resilience of Don Mario Nardoni Zeni.

Today, twenty men comprise the Rotary Club of Queretaro, who gather every Thursday in their own building beginning at 2:30. It is among the most active of the four clubs within the city limits.
